One of the Braves' top players is inching closer to a return.
Drake Baldwin, who has been on the injured list since May 19 with a right oblique strain, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. The 25-year-old went 1-for-3, homering in his third plate appearance of the game on a ball that left his bat at a Statcast-projected 110.4 mph. Baldwin was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning.
Baldwin is expected to play again on Sunday for Gwinnett and could potentially return for the Braves’ homestand that begins on Tuesday against the Giants.
In 48 games before his injury, Baldwin was one of the best players in baseball, posting a .303/.389/.543 slash line with 13 home runs. Despite missing nearly a month, Baldwin’s 2.1 wins above replacement (per FanGraphs) entering Saturday ranked fourth among primary catchers.
