Dropkick Murphys rock out on Fenway diamond

BOSTON -- Let’s face it. Everyone is thirsting for some live action at Fenway Park.

On Friday night, Boston-based rockers Dropkick Murphys provided just that with a “Streaming Outta Fenway” concert that fans everywhere were able to watch live.

“Fenway is synonymous with summertime. We have a great relationship with the Red Sox that we’re grateful for,” said Ken Casey, the band’s lead singer, during an interview on MLB Tonight. “We went to them and they said, ‘No problem.’”

The band also brought in a virtual guest for a couple of songs. You might have heard of him before -- his name is Bruce Springsteen.

“We’re going to have him up on the jumbotron joining us. We figured that’s the next best thing to him joining us here unless he surprises us and choppers in and lands in center field,” said Casey.

Though the Dropkicks have played many Fenway shows before, they're getting to perform at a sacred location of the ballpark this time.

“We’ve played here many times, but we’ve never, nor has any band, ever played on the infield diamond,” said Casey. “They treat that like sacred ground. Because there’s not current[ly] baseball playing, they’re being a little more [flexible] with us. We’ll basically be in the positions of the infielders as we perform the concert.”

Of course, the band's hit “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” was part of the setlist.

The event benefits two charities -- The Boston Resiliency Fund and Habitat for Humanity, Greater Boston -- that are playing a key role in helping families during the coronavirus pandemic.
