Volquez undergoes Tommy John surgery

ATLANTA -- Edinson Vólquez on Friday underwent Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Dr. Timothy Kremchek, an orthopedic surgeon, performed the procedure in Cincinnati.
Volquez will return to Miami on Sunday and begin his therapy on Monday. The recommended recovery for a starter is 12-14 months, which means the 34-year-old is in danger of also missing all of 2018.
Miami's Opening Day starter, Volquez went 4-8 with a 4.19 ERA in 17 starts.
In a season that was cut short by injury, Volquez provided the best pitching moment of the season for the Marlins. On June 3, he no-hit the D-backs, becoming the sixth pitcher in franchise history to toss a no-hitter.
Volquez signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Marlins in December, and he is slated to make $13 million in 2018.
Volquez's last start came on July 5, when he threw four innings in a no-decision at St. Louis. He went on the disabled list two days later with left knee tendinitis, and during his rehab process, he experienced discomfort in his throwing elbow.
"He's disappointed, honestly," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "As things unfolded, it started with the knee, and he had some other troubles. To have that [elbow] MRI, it's like, 'Really?' Disappointment in that."
Volquez has now undergone two Tommy John surgeries, both performed by Dr. Kremchek. His first came in 2009 while he was with the Reds.
Worth noting
• Reliever Kyle Barraclough, on the DL with a right shoulder impingement, threw a 20-pitch bullpen on Friday. His next bullpen is set for Monday.
• First baseman Justin Bour (right oblique strain) is improving. Though he started light activities, he will not begin baseball activities until he is pain free.
• Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) is scheduled to throw a 40-pitch bullpen on Saturday. If that goes well, he is lined up to throw live batting practice on Wednesday.
• Third baseman Martín Prado, one week removed from right knee surgery, is working on range of motion and strengthening.
• Shortstop JT Riddle is scheduled to have surgery on his left shoulder next Friday.
