Fresh off their nation’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 win over the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Atlanta, a thrilling 2-1 victory with Harry Kane scoring both goals, English soccer fans took to Truist Park for Wednesday’s Cardinals-Braves game -- and delivered a must-see moment in the process.
A group of England supporters in the outfield bleachers essentially adopted Braves center fielder Michael Harris II, even working the speedster into song lyrics (such as “walking in a Harris wonderland”) and the nation’s “It’s coming home” rallying cry. And they cheered loudly every time Harris came to bat -- he went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the eighth inning -- during Atlanta’s 5-1 win.
Born in DeKalb, Ga., Harris has no known connection to England or its Three Lions soccer team, but the 2022 National League Rookie of the Year sure seemed to appreciate the support. Harris even tossed a ball into the swarm of England rooters, who went wild trying to snag a souvenir from their new favorite player.
