SAN DIEGO -- Eric Hosmer wasted no time putting the Padres on the board in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday afternoon in San Diego's 4-0 win over the Rockies at Petco Park.
Hosmer followed Travis Jankowski's leadoff single by mashing a first-pitch dinger into the right-field seats. He turned on a 94-mph fastball from Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez for his sixth homer of the season.
Hosmer's blast broke up something of a mini-slump for the slugging first baseman. He was 8-for-44 (.182) in his past 12 games. Hosmer had struck out only eight times in that stretch, but he was making very weak contact for the most part.
There was nothing weak about Hosmer's dinger. He smashed it 396 feet with an exit velocity of 102 mph -- the fourth time this season he has gone deep at home.
