White expected to be OK after early exit

Mariners rookie first baseman Evan White was removed from the first game of Thursday's doubleheader at San Diego, a 10-7 loss, in the third inning due to discomfort in his right shoulder following his first at-bat, in the second inning.

White, Seattle's No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, popped out to shortstop on the play and immediately grabbed his shoulder or chest area. He stayed in the game for the bottom of that frame defensively but was replaced by José Marmolejos at first base in the third.

“Evan dove for a ball in the first game of the series here and landed on his right shoulder,” said manager Scott Servais. “He was a little sore yesterday and obviously tried to give it a go today. But he felt it on that first at-bat, so we’re having him checked out. Everything that’s been checked so far is negative, and he should be OK. But he is sore.”

Marmolejos promptly hit a two-run home run off Padres starter Dinelson Lamet in his first at-bat, in the fourth inning of the first game, and added a grand slam in the first inning of the second game.

The 24-year-old White is one of Seattle’s core group of young players being developed this year, and although he’s hitting just .167, he has been a defensive standout, and his bat has heated up of late. He has hit .310 with four home runs and three doubles over his last 10 games.
