Former Marlin Antonio Alfonseca continues to inspire the next generation through Marlins Nike RBI

For former Major League pitcher Antonio Alfonseca, time on the baseball field now includes helping develop the next generation of players through Marlins Nike RBI.

Now in his second season coaching in the program, Alfonseca brings his Major League experience to young athletes while serving as a mentor and coach. Outside of the Marlins Nike RBI season, he also serves as the pitching coach at Everglades High School in Miramar.

Alfonseca spent 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, including six with the Marlins across two stints. The right-handed reliever made his Major League debut with the Florida Marlins in 1997 and was part of the franchise’s first World Series championship team that season. He went on to lead the National League with 45 saves in 2000 and finished his Major League career with 129 saves across 592 appearances.

His connection to youth baseball in South Florida has continued beyond his professional playing career. Alfonseca has participated in Marlins youth initiatives over the years, including clinics and events that give young athletes opportunities to learn from former Major League players.

That experience now carries into his work as a Marlins Nike RBI coach. Athletes have the opportunity to learn from someone who competed at the highest level of the game while developing their own skills through the program.

Marlins Nike RBI provides free instructional and competitive baseball and softball programming for athletes ages 13 to 18 across South Florida. Through coaches like Alfonseca, the program combines on-field development with an emphasis on building strong relationships between athletes and coaches as young players continue their development on and off the field.
