Team Puerto Rico won a thrilling World Baseball Classic matchup with Panama in San Juan on Saturday night thanks to a 10th-inning walk-off homer off the bat of Darell Hernaiz.
One player who wasn’t there to witness his homeland's dramatic victory live was nevertheless exuberant in the wake of the big win.
Watching on television, five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award-winning shortstop Francisco Lindor was absolutely jubilant as Hernaiz rounded the bases, as seen on a video the Mets star posted to Instagram.
Lindor, who was initially ready to play for Puerto Rico in this year’s Classic after participating in the 2017 and 2023 tournaments, was unable to do so this year after undergoing a cleanup procedure on his right elbow.
But even though he wasn’t with his brothers in San Juan on Saturday night, Lindor is celebrating from afar and has been in constant contact with his compatriots. Following Puerto Rico’s win over Colombia in its tournament opener on Friday, Lindor FaceTimed his way into the celebration -- and it appears he did the same after Saturday's win.
Lindor and Team Puerto Rico, which is seeking its first Classic championship, hope there will be more such celebrations on the horizon as the club's run continues on Monday night against Cuba (7 ET on FS1).
