PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Francisco Lindor’s path to Opening Day took another step in the right direction Monday.

The Mets’ shortstop played catch for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a stress reaction in his left hamate bone on February 11, a significant event as he works to be ready for the start of the season.

“He's going to go through some light defensive drills, so now he’s incorporating more baseball activity,” manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday. “Hopefully he’ll start swinging a bat, if it’s not today, I'm pretty sure tomorrow he'll start that.”

Lindor had been taking part in light baseball activities during the past week since his stitches were removed last Tuesday, but Monday marked the first time he had tested his injured hand.
