MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers placed right-hander Matt Garza on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and will recall Paolo Espino to start Thursday's series finale against the Giants at Miller Park.
Garza's injury was technically termed a "chest contusion," but in practice he has symptoms of whiplash. That's how hard Garza crashed into 250-pound first baseman Jesús Aguilar during Garza's last start, causing soreness in his neck and shoulder that impeded a bullpen session on Tuesday.
The hope is that Garza will miss only one start. He will attempt another bullpen session during the Brewers' road series against the D-backs from Friday-Sunday.
"We'll know more after this weekend," manager Craig Counsell said.
When Espino made his Major League debut May 19 at Wrigley Field, it was a one-start stint. This time, he could pitch at least twice, since the Brewers are scheduled to play a doubleheader in St. Louis on Tuesday, the day before Garza is eligible to come off the DL.
Garza has a 3.83 ERA after his first eight starts this season.
"The positive is that we're in such a good spot [as a starting rotation], and I don't want to bring a negative," Garza said.
