Cole returns to site of 15-K masterpiece seeking another gem vs. Angels

ANAHEIM -- When Gerrit Cole steps onto the mound at Angel Stadium on Tuesday night, the Yankees won’t just be looking for another strong outing from their ace -- they’ll be looking for stability at the very moment their season demands it.

With the calendar flipping to September, New York finds itself in the thick of a tight American League East race, trailing the first-place Rays while trying to lock down postseason positioning.

Following rookie Elmer Rodríguez's start in Monday's series opener and setting the table for Cam Schlittler later in the week, Cole gives the Yankees a proven anchor in the middle of their rotation. After lefty Max Fried was activated from the injured list on Friday, Cole’s outing showcases a restocked rotation as New York opens a six-game road trip through Anaheim and San Diego.

For Cole, Tuesday marks his 18th start since returning from Tommy John surgery, which cost him the entire 2025 campaign. While Tommy John recovery often comes with workload hurdles, the 35-year-old right-hander has looked progressively like his peak self, posturing his second half like having a "fresh set of tires" for a late-season push.

Tuesday also happens to be the fifth anniversary of one of Cole’s best pitching performances: a 15-strikeout gem he fired in 2021 on the very same mound at Angel Stadium.

Cole enters Tuesday with a 7-7 record, with a 3.19 ERA and 105 strikeouts across 98 2/3 innings. In his last 10 starts, Cole has limited opponents to three earned runs or fewer each time out, pitching to a 2.66 ERA over that stretch.

Cole’s recent stretch has also been accompanied by personal history. On Aug. 20 in Baltimore, Cole delivered one of the most efficient command performances of his career, throwing a career-high 95.7 percent of his first-pitch strikes over six brilliant innings.

Along the way, he fanned eight Orioles to reach 1,015 strikeouts as a Yankee, passing Roger Clemens (1,014) for 12th place on the franchise's all-time strikeout list.

Though Cole suffered a hard-luck 5-1 loss on Thursday against the Astros-- allowing three runs over six innings on a pair of costly wall-scrapers -- manager Aaron Boone noted that his ace pitched far better than the final line indicated.

Cole threw 59 of his 79 pitches for strikes and was one pitch away from running a sixth consecutive start allowing two runs or fewer.
