SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants right fielder Hunter Pence expects to be ready for next week's start of Spring Training despite an apparently mild injury in his right side.
Pence, 33, acknowledged he isn't working out at full intensity -- "I'm being a little cautious," he said -- but sounded optimistic overall.
"Everything's good. I should be ready to go day one of Spring Training," said Pence, adding that his current ailment did not result from a previous oblique injury in his left side.
Pence, who played in 106 games last year and 52 in 2015 after appearing in 154 to 162 games each season from 2008-2014, hopes to stay healthy enough to become an everyday fixture in the lineup again.
"It's a big goal, a powerful intention to sustain the whole season," Pence said. "As I get older, I have to make some adjustments and back off a little bit [from] the crazy workouts I did when I was young coming up."
Giants pitchers and catchers are due to report to camp in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday. They'll have their first workout the next day. Reporting date for position players is Thursday, one day before the initial full-squad workout.
