HOUSTON -- Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres exited Monday night’s 9-3 win against the Astros after taking a swing at a pitch in the second inning.

Moments after Kevin McGonigle’s two-out solo homer off Kai-Wei Teng gave Detroit a 2-0 lead, Torres swung through a 92.4 mph fastball on the first pitch of his second at-bat. He then bent over, and after being examined by assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades, headed for the dugout.

Hao-Yu Lee came in for Torres and continued the at-bat. He struck out swinging, giving Teng six strikeouts in two innings. Torres had been Teng’s first strikeout victim when he went down swinging in the first inning.

Torres suffered a left oblique strain that landed him on the injured list on May 6. He was activated on June 2 and hit .350 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 10 games, entering Monday. He is slashing .280/.395/.395 for the season.

“I don’t know if it’s related to what he previously had,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after the game, “but I saw his reaction in the box. So when I went out, I just asked him what was going on, and he said it was uncomfortable. So that was an easy decision [to take him out].

“I hope it’s something mild, but we’ll need to get him looked at.”
