DETROIT -- Add another injury to the Tigers’ growing injured list, now up to 14 players. Second baseman Gleyber Torres was placed on the 10-day IL on Wednesday with a mild left oblique strain he sustained on Saturday.
Torres had been considered day to day and he was seemingly progressing towards a return. Manager A.J. Hinch said on Tuesday that Torres was “inching towards the lineup” and could be ready as soon as Wednesday. But Torres hadn’t progressed from there, and the Tigers couldn’t go any further playing short with their roster.
“Gleyber’s been getting treatment and getting looked at by doctors, and things like that, and it continues to be stagnant,” Hinch said. “We’ve played short the last couple of days. Hopefully this will resolve itself within the short time period, but nowadays, I don’t know.”
Torres underwent further testing on Tuesday.
“The last couple days, it was getting better and better,” Torres said. “But I still feel a little bit in the area. So at this point, it’s kind of early [in the season] and we don’t want to push too much. Thankfully, it’s not really that big of a strain, so hopefully I can give it five days, not two weeks. We had the same situation last year with my oblique; it was supposed to be 3-4 weeks and it just took me 10 days.”
The previous IL stint Torres referenced happened in the Opening Week of the 2025 season. His current IL placement is retroactive to Monday, so he’ll be eligible to return as soon as May 14.
Torres joins double-play partner Javier Báez on the 10-day IL. Fellow infielder Zach McKinstry just returned from the IL on Tuesday. He’ll be part of the mix at second base, along with Hao-Yu Lee, who was called up when McKinstry went on the IL on April 17.
To fill Torres’ spot, the Tigers recalled infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers had just optioned Jung on Sunday, which normally would make him ineligible to return for 10 days, but he could be recalled to replace an injured player. The 2022 first-round Draft pick went 1-for-4 with a run scored in two games in his previous stint after initially being called up to fill in for Báez.
