CarGo, Rockies spoil Cueto's Giants debut

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Led by Carlos Gonzalez and Gerardo Parra, who had two RBIs apiece, all but one starter in Colorado's lineup either hit safely, drove in a run or scored at least once to lead the Rockies past the Giants, 8-6, in a Cactus League game on Thursday.
The Rockies jumped on Johnny Cueto, the Giants starter who signed a six-year, $130 million deal this past offseason as a free agent. Cueto lasted 1 1/3 innings, yielding five runs and four hits.
"There were a few mistakes," Cueto said through an interpreter. "The ball was not breaking the way I wanted. But that's what Spring Training is for."

Cueto's troubles began when Gonzalez lashed a two-run homer with one out in the first inning. One inning later, consecutive singles by Daniel Descalso and Kyle Parker scored Nick Hundley. That ended Cueto's afternoon. Adalberto Mejia, the 11th-ranked prospect in San Francisco's system, surrendered Parra's two-run single.

Back-to-back doubles by Hundley and Descalso accounted for Colorado's fourth-inning run. RBI singles by Mark Reynolds and Nolan Arenado accounted for the Rockies' pair of runs in the fifth.
"First time out [for Cueto], we don't want to make too much of it," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But I thought our guys had a good approach early in the game, for sure."

After they couldn't get anything going against Rockies starter Eddie Butler, who allowed two hits over three scoreless innings, the Giants halved the difference in the bottom of the fifth on run-scoring hits by Gorkys Hernandez, Matt Duffy, Ehire Adrianza and George Kottaras.
After loading the bases with one out in the seventh, the Giants relied on Ryan Lollis' fielder's-choice grounder and Chad Qualls' wild pitch to add a pair of runs.
Up next for Rockies: Left-hander Jorge De La Rosa will take the hill at home against the Cincinnati Reds at 1:10 p.m. MT on Thursday for his Cactus League debut. De La Rosa will be followed by right-hander Tyler Chatwood, who's coming back from Tommy John surgery that has kept him out of the Major Leagues since 2014, plus lefty Yohan Flande and righty Carlos Estevez.
Up next for Giants: Having won two of the first three Cactus League road games, the Giants will attempt to continue their success Thursday as they visit the Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale. Rookie right-hander Chris Stratton, who has an outside shot at claiming a spot in the season-opening starting rotation, will oppose Brewers righty Jimmy Nelson at 12:05 p.m. PT.
