D-backs radio voice Greg Schulte to undergo chemotherapy

PHOENIX -- D-backs radio voice Greg Schulte who was scheduled to broadcast only home games this year, will be taking some additional games off to deal with a medical issue.

Schulte's voice has been synonymous with D-backs baseball since he called the team's first game in 1998.

“For me the biggest moment of my baseball career has his voice attached to it,” said D-backs legend Luis Gonzalez, referring to his game-winning hit in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. “That’s something special because of the person he is and what he’s meant to this organization.”

Schulte called his 3,000th D-backs game in 2017 and had decided prior to this year that he would only call home games from now on.

Schulte released the following statement Monday:

D-backs fans, I want to let you know I recently was diagnosed with a medical condition that is requiring me to begin chemotherapy treatment.

Before the 2022 season, the D-backs and I agreed to a “home games only” broadcast schedule. That has nothing to do with my current situation. Now, in addition to missing road game broadcasts, I’ll be missing some home game broadcasts.

I want to thank my family for their love and support, the D-backs, D-backs fans, and my broadcast partners for their support and willingness to cover for me while I’m away from the radio booth.

I appreciate your prayers and privacy as I concentrate on my health at this time. I’m staying positive and hoping for a full recovery.

I look forward to the day I’m back in the radio booth once again calling D-backs games.
