ST. LOUIS -- The Guardians got a pair of reinforcements back on Monday, activating right-hander Hunter Gaddis from the 15-day injured list and outfielder George Valera from the 10-day IL before their series opener against the Cardinals.
To clear space on the roster, Cleveland optioned outfielder CJ Kayfus to Triple-A Columbus and designated left-hander Kolby Allard for assignment.
Gaddis’ return provides a boost to a bullpen that has been heavily taxed early in the season. He missed time with a right forearm strain but completed a five-appearance rehab assignment before rejoining the club.
“I kind of view this as it’s Opening Day for Gaddie,” manager Stephen Vogt said. “When it’s his turn to pitch, he’ll pitch.”
Gaddis, who has emerged as one of Cleveland’s more reliable relievers over the past two seasons, said he feels ready to contribute right away.
“It’s a process,” Gaddis said. “You want to be out there with the team, but you’ve got to trust it. Now that I’m back, I feel ready to go.”

Valera returns after working back from a left calf strain, using a rehab stint to build up to everyday action. The 25-year-old said the focus was on regaining rhythm and durability.
“I feel pretty good,” Valera said. “Just working hard, trusting my process and getting my body ready to play every day.”
Vogt noted Valera’s potential impact on the lineup, pointing to his power and defensive versatility.
“Loved the quality of the at-bats, loved the power potential and ability to play both corner positions,” Vogt said.
Kayfus, who appeared in nine games with Cleveland, will return to Triple-A to get more consistent at-bats. Allard’s designation drops the 40-man roster tally to 39, opening a spot as the Guardians continue to shuffle their pitching staff.
