Heisey, Taylor lift Nats; Fedde strong in start

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Starting pitching ruled Saturday at Port St. Lucie, Fla., with Steven Matz and Erick Fedde each allowing no earned runs over three innings in a 6-0 Nationals win over the Mets at First Data Field.
Making his second Grapefruit League start, Matz allowed one unearned run, following a Yoenis Céspedes fielding error in the first.

"I feel pretty comfortable out there on the mound, even with runners on, which is a good sign," Matz said.
Fedde was even stingier, allowing nothing more than a hit and a walk. The Nationals' second-ranked prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, Fedde has not given up a run in seven innings this spring.
"I felt like this [was] one of my first real chances to go out and start against a team with a lot of their [starters] playing," said Fedde, who induced Neil Walker into a 1-6-3 double play with runners on the corners and one out in the third. "And just to get into a jam and get out of it, it felt good that I proved myself a little bit in a small sense."

Chris Heisey and Clint Robinson added to the Nationals' lead with RBI singles in the sixth inning, part of a three-run rally against Mets reliever Erik Goeddel. Michael A. Taylor also collected two hits, stole a base and scored twice for the Nats.

Nationals Up Next: Right-hander Joe Ross (1-0, 3.86) will take the mound for his third start this spring when the Nationals return to The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Sunday to face the Astros at 1:05 ET on MLB.TV. Recently acquired catcher Matt Wieters will make his debut in a Nationals uniform after spending the past eight years in Baltimore. 2015 American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel makes his spring debut on the mound for the Astros.
