Chourio, Turang shoot hoops with Marquette basketball as World Series victory tour continues
The Brewers’ victory lap after the first World Series championship in franchise history has already featured stops at Lambeau Field and Saturday Night Live. Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang have now added Marquette basketball to the list.
The duo attended the Golden Eagles’ season-opening win over Mercyhurst on Monday. While there, Chourio showed off his elite athleticism and lived up to his namesake, and Turang delivered a pregame message to the team.
According to ESPN, Chourio’s father was a huge Los Angeles Lakers fan in the early 2000s and gave him the middle name “Bryan” in honor of late Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Chourio’s younger brother Jaison, the Guardians’ No. 5 prospect, also has the middle name “Oneel” after fellow former Lakers star Shaquille O’Neal.
So, after Marquette’s win, the group of Brewers got some shots up from the 3-point line. Chourio’s first -- a one-handed heave -- found the bottom of the net to big cheers from onlookers. He took a few more shots and made another one.
Chourio’s good-looking jumper prompted Marquette coach Shaka Smart to joke that the 22-year-old is young enough to have eligibility to play on the Golden Eagles’ roster.
Smart, while addressing local reporters afterward, also said his team had talked about the Brewers ahead of this season, so he prompted Turang to give a pregame speech.
“He said something really powerful,” Smart said. “He said when they get behind, ‘We’re behind, but we’re not losing.’ It was a powerful distinction. Hopefully our guys listened carefully. But it was good to have that energy in the building tonight.”
A fitting message from Turang after his Brewers manufactured eight comeback wins in the postseason.
