ANAHEIM -- Angels starter Jaime Barría threw strike, after strike, after strike to the Giants' Brandon Belt in the first inning on Sunday. Twelve in a row after the count had reached 3-2 -- each of them fouled off. But in the end, Barria finally induced Belt to fly out to right field after 21 pitches.
The 21-pitch at-bat was the longest in the past 20 years, beating the previous record of 20 set by Ricky Gutierrez during his at-bat against Bartolo Colon on June 26, 1998.
Belt was the second batter of the game, and the first retired by Barria, who finished the inning after throwing 49 pitches and escaping a bases-loaded jam.
