ST. PETERSBURG -- Royals right-hander Jakob Junis had to leave Wednesday’s game against the Rays because of a right hand contusion and is considered day to day.

Junis took a line drive from Yandy Diaz off his throwing hand and glove with one out and two runners on in the fifth.

Junis recovered to grab the ball and start an inning-ended 1-4-3 double play. That kept the Royals’ lead at 4-1 at the time.

Junis was replaced by left-hander Jake Diekman to start the fifth.

Junis gave up four hits and one run while striking out six over his five innings.
