Cosart solid in start as Marlins top Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE -- Jacob deGrom made his third successful Spring Training start, but the Marlins pushed across a pair of eighth-inning runs to beat the Mets 2-1 on a chilly Monday afternoon at Tradition Field.
The Marlins broke a scoreless tie after Robert Andino and Cole Gillespie opened the eighth with singles off reliever Jim Henderson.

Andino stole third and came home on the play when the throw from catcher Kevin Plawecki sailed into left field. Gillespie scored when Tomas Telis bounced into a double play.

Danny Muno's RBI groundout cut the deficit in the ninth off Andre Rienzo.

In his second consecutive start against the Marlins, deGrom scattered four hits over four innings, throwing 59 pitches, 41 of those for strikes. He struck out five batters.
"I felt fine out there," said deGrom, who continues to work his fastball into shape for the regular season. "If the guy's late on the fastball, then you're obviously doing something right. I think the object is to get outs, last time I checked."

David Wright continued to get himself into shape, playing in his third spring game and second in as many days. Wright went 1-for-3 on Sunday with an RBI after going 2-for-3 in his spring debut on Friday. He was 0-for-3 with a strikeout on Monday, but he was more concerned with just getting more playing time.
Marlins starter Jarred Cosart, who is vying for a spot in the rotation, went 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked two with a pair of hits.

Up next for the Marlins:Jose Fernandez will be on the mound for the Marlins at 1:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday against the Red Sox at Roger Dean Stadium. It can be heard live on Gameday Audio. Fernandez has been tabbed as Miami's Game 2 starter. The right-hander is building up to around 70 pitches. Giancarlo Stanton, who didn't play Monday at the Mets, is expected to be in the lineup. Boston is starting right-hander Steven Wright.
Up next for the Mets: The Mets will face the Yankees at 6:35 p.m. ET on Tuesday at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Lefty Steven Matz gets the start in a game that can be heard live on Gameday Audio. In three appearances (two starts) this spring, Matz is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA. The Yankees counter with righty Luis Severino.
