Dyson makes D-backs debut: 'It felt great'

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Outfielder Jarrod Dyson made his D-backs debut Friday as the designated hitter in Arizona's 15-6 loss to the Rockies at Salt River Fields.
Dyson, who was signed to a two-year deal by the D-backs just after camp opened, had not played in a game since Sept. 2 due to a hernia injury.
"I've been out for quite a while, so it felt great to get out there and knock a little rust off me," he said. "Just being out there on the field with my teammates felt great."
In his first at-bat, Dyson grounded out to second. One inning later, he beat out an infield hit and was pinch-run for by Kevin Cron.

"He was being really cautious with me because of the injury and the last thing he wants to do is see me re-injure it," Dyson said of Arizona manager Torey Lovullo. "I feel like me running down the line was good enough for him. I'm all on board with the program that we've got going on here, with them easing me into it."
The next step for Dyson will be to play in the outfield.
Lamb bam
Third baseman Jake Lamb hit his first homer of the spring, a grand slam in the third inning off Chad Bettis.
"Obviously people want results, but I'm not too worried about that, I'm more worried about timing and just seeing the baseball," Lamb said. "My last game I had two ABs and I just completely threw them away, didn't see the baseball at all and was just auto-swinging and auto-taking, so today felt good."

Dual role
Right-hander Albert Suárez, whom the D-backs selected from the Giants in last year's Rule 5 Draft, started and allowed three runs on five hits over two-plus innings.

Suarez made 18 relief appearances for San Francisco last year after seeing action in 22 games the year before, 12 as a starter. He prefers to start, but with the D-backs' rotation filled, Suarez is competing for a bullpen spot.
The team, though, is keeping him stretched out as a starter for now so they have some depth in case of an injury.
Injury update
Reliever Brad Boxberger, who is taking things slowly this spring, is set to throw a bullpen Saturday.
Randall Delgado, who experienced elbow issues last year, will throw in a simulated game Monday.
Jimmy Sherfy, who has experienced some shoulder fatigue, went through a throwing program and came through in good shape.
Feliz debut
Neftalí Feliz, whose start to camp was delayed by paperwork issues in the Dominican Republic, is scheduled to make his first spring appearance Saturday.
Up next
The D-backs travel to Glendale to take on the Dodgers on Saturday with Robbie Ray getting the start. Lovullo said he was not worried about the division-rival Dodgers getting an extra look at the lefty.
"In certain cases we're not so concerned about that," Lovullo said. "Right now we want Robbie to go there and compete and get himself physically and mentally ready and we thought that would be the best challenge for him."
