On-base streak ends, but Werth gets job done

ATLANTA -- Nationals left fielder Jayson Werth went 0-for-5 in a 7-6 victory over the Braves and saw his on-base streak end at 46 games, a franchise record he shares with Rusty Staub. It was also the longest such streak this season in Major League Baseball.
The streak may have ended, but Werth's ninth-inning at-bat was one of the reasons the Nationals won. Pinch-runner Pedro Severino was running toward second when Werth, who had struck out three times, grounded out to third, allowing Severino to easily advance to second. Following a walk to Anthony Rendon, Clint Robinson hit a single, scoring Severino to give Washington a 7-6 lead.
"Werth kept the ball in play, which he was having a tough time doing. It allowed us to win the ballgame," Nationals manager Dusty Baker said.
Said Werth, "The more important thing is that we won the game. The problem with streaks sometimes is that they tend to get bigger than the games. People started to talk about it. I'm glad we can get back to baseball. It was fun you were helping your team on a daily basis.
"Like I said, it's not the most glamorous of streaks anyway. I'm almost glad it's over. … As we get down the stretch here, we have something to accomplish and I don't want any individual stuff to take away from that."
During the streak, Werth had 43 hits with 32 walks. It started June 20 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
