NEW YORK -- There were a few smiles seen on the Yankees’ bench as Jazz Chisholm Jr. rolled in obvious discomfort near home plate, having been struck in a sensitive area by a batted ball.

They faded when the infielder was unable to remain in the game.

Chisholm exited Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the White Sox after being hit in the groin by the ricochet of his foul ball. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game that he had not received a final update on Chisholm’s status.

“I’m hoping he is [OK],” Boone said.

Facing Sean Burke in the fourth inning, Chisholm remained down for several moments after the incident and was attended to by head athletic trainer Tim Lentych. Chisholm eventually stood, then limped off the field.

Anthony Volpe replaced Chisholm as a pinch-hitter, inheriting a 2-2 count. Volpe worked a walk.

Following Chisholm’s departure, an audible groan could be heard from the crowd as televisions around the ballpark showed a slow-motion instant replay.

Chisholm has experienced a few bumps and bruises this past week from foul balls clipping off the lower parts of his legs, but this was undoubtedly his most uncomfortable.

The 28-year-old is batting .228 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 70 games this season.
