Jazz Chisholm Jr. continues to be the leading vote-getter among National League second basemen for the All-Star Game, but you know what he would really like to try at least once in his career? Compete in the Home Run Derby.
"I would love to do it but I think people would rather see Aaron Judge swing than me," Chisholm told MLB.com. "Imagine me hitting at a Home Run Derby and they see a 500-foot bomb. I'm 180 [pounds]."
The 24-year-old Chisholm, who is looking to become the first player born in the Bahamas to earn an All-Star selection, entered Tuesday with 14 homers. Nolan Arenado, Marcell Ozuna and Juan Soto are among those with as many. Chisholm said he would have his mentor, Geron Sands, pitch to him if the opportunity ever arose. It's something they've discussed in the past.
This season, Chisholm is one of only three players in the Majors with at least 12 homers and 12 stolen bases. Among NL second basemen, he has the highest OPS (.864) and the second-highest FanGraphs WAR (2.6) behind Tommy Edman, who has been playing shortstop for the Cardinals.
Miami has only had six players make the All-Star team via the fan vote. In the latest update, Chisholm had received 1,066,927 votes, ahead of the Braves' Ozzie Albies (984,846), who is out with a left foot fracture, and the Mets' Jeff McNeil (945,335).
"It'd be amazing, just going out there and being an All-Star," Chisholm said. "What else can anybody say about that? There's a lot of people that don't ever get to the Major Leagues in the first place. To be an All-Star, I would just be grateful for the opportunity."
Fans can fill out a 2022 Chevrolet MLB All-Star Ballot as many as five times per 24-hour period until Phase 1 of voting closes at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday. You can vote exclusively at MLB.com, on all 30 MLB club sites and on the MLB app. The All-Star Game will take place July 19 at Dodger Stadium.
