DeShields collects 2 hits; Hahn makes rotation case

MESA, Ariz. -- Marcus Semien doubled and scored twice, helping the A's claim a 5-1 victory over the American League West rival Rangers at Hohokam Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Oakland plated three runs under the watch of Rangers starter Mike Hauschild, one of them unearned courtesy of an error by shortstop Hanser Alberto. Hauschild, a Rule 5 Draft selection competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, allowed four hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings.
A's starter Jesse Hahn, meanwhile, fared better with men on base, working around three hits to toss three scoreless frames. The right-hander struck out three in the outing, which surely helped his bid for the fifth-starter job.
"I need to be consistently in the zone, consistent with all my pitches, and that's exactly the approach I took today, and I think I did a good job of it," Hahn said. "I want to prove myself early. You only get so many opportunities, so when I do get them, I want to impress."

A's corner infielder Ryon Healy totaled two RBIs, and outfield prospectJaycob Brugman chipped in with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Oakland finished with 10 hits, compared to the Rangers' five -- two apiece for Delino DeShields and Alberto.
The Rangers finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh, when Alberto singled to score Drew Robinson. Alberto was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
"I felt like we got ourselves in some hitter's counts and we didn't drive the ball through the infield," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Didn't get it on the barrel like we want to."
Rangers Up Next:Tyler Wagner, claimed off waivers from the D-backs over the offseason, will make his second appearance of the spring when he starts at 2:05 p.m. CT on Friday against the Mariners in Surprise. There will be an exclusive audio webcast on rangers.com. Wagner allowed two runs on four hits in two innings on Monday against the Indians. Alex Claudio and Allen Webster are also expected to pitch.
Athletics Up Next: Right-hander Kendall Graveman will be on the mound when the A's host the Giants on Friday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium.
