Ryan (arm fatigue) pushed back; Prielipp expected to start on Sunday

MINNEAPOLIS – The Twins’ rotation will see some shakeup ahead of their series beginning Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, as Joe Ryan will now start in that series instead of his originally scheduled start against the A’s on Sunday due to arm fatigue.

Ryan last started for the Twins on Monday against the Guardians and gave up a career-high six home runs in the Twins' 13-4 loss to their division rival.

“He just had some general arm fatigue,” said Twins manager Derek Shelton. “And coming out of the break, after talking to him, Pete [Maki, pitching coach] and I talking to him, and then talking to Nick [Paparesta, head athletic trainer], it was just like, ‘All right, let’s just move this back and get him back on track.’”

"We were working through some stuff for a little bit, and we were trying to figure that out,” Ryan said before Saturday’s game. “Obviously, didn't get figured out then. So just taking time to make sure we get it definitive."

Ryan threw a bullpen pre-game on Saturday, and the Twins will determine his next steps after they see how the right-hander recovers on Sunday. Shelton shared that the Twins do anticipate activating left-handed starter Connor Prielipp from the injured list to make the start in Ryan’s place on Sunday.

While Ryan did pitch one inning in the All-Star Game for the American League, he does not attribute the arm fatigue to pitching in the game just three days after his previous start.

As for Ryan’s recovery since his start Monday, he says the arm fatigue has been dying down, and there’s no cause for injury concern for him right now.

"I would say we did a good job of doing the things we wanted to attack beforehand and kind of played a little catch-up there. I think the staff has done a good job of helping me get back to a good neutral place and [I] threw a really good bullpen today, so we're happy about it," Ryan said.
