Bart exits with fracture in left hand after 97.7 mph HBP

BOSTON – In the midst of a back-and-forth affair at Fenway Park on Thursday night, the White Sox suffered a blow when Joey Bart was removed from the game after being hit by a 97.7 mph fastball on his left hand in the seventh inning.

Before the conclusion of the game, the team had announced that Bart suffered a fifth metacarpal fracture in his left hand and will undergo further evaluation. He had also been hit on the foot in the top of the second inning.

The White Sox catcher, acquired from Pittsburgh at the Trade Deadline on Monday, was making just his second start since being acquired. Bart figured to get plenty of reps behind the plate with Kyle Teel on the injured list with a left ankle sprain.

Including his pinch-hit appearance on Wednesday, Bart is 0-for-6 since joining the White Sox, with a walk and four strikeouts. On the year, he’s batting .214 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

Drew Romo came on to run for Bart and remained in the game behind the dish at catcher.
