SAN DIEGO -- Johnny Cueto's season will begin again Tuesday.
That night, Cueto will officially rejoin the Giants and face the D-backs, against whom he has posted an 11-3 record in 15 career starts.
The Giants determined that Cueto recovered smoothly from the sprained left ankle he sustained in his April 4 start against Seattle, when he lasted six innings. His final tests included pitching to hitters and performing fielding drills on Saturday. He felt fine physically Sunday, cementing the Giants' opinion.
• Manager Bruce Bochy said a sore right thumb kept catcher Buster Posey out of Sunday's starting lineup. Bochy reasoned that resting Sunday, combined with Monday's scheduled off-day, should enable Posey to return healthy Tuesday.
• Right-hander Jeff Samardzija won't be returning to the Major Leagues immediately. The Giants determined he should make another Minor League injury rehabilitation start after throwing 61 pitches in 2 2/3 innings Saturday in a game with Class A Advanced San Jose. Samardzija is recovering from a strained right pectoral muscle.
