Montgomery tosses 5 scoreless innings in 8th rehab start

ARLINGTON -- While the Trade Deadline has now come and gone, the Rangers are expected to get a quasi-Deadline addition soon.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery continued his Tommy John rehab on Sunday night at Triple-A Round Rock as he works toward his return.
How did he perform?
In his eighth rehab start, Montgomery threw five scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five.
He touched 92.9 mph with his sinker, per Statcast. He also threw 25 curveballs, seven sliders and seven changeups.
What’s next?
Montgomery said he wanted his last outing to be his final rehab start, but the organization felt it was better to continue having him refine his stuff in the Minors before throwing him into the fire before his first MLB start since 2024. He could potentially be an option for the next turn through the rotation, but that’s still to be determined.

“He’s still got to build up and get to where he wants to be,” said Rangers manager Skip Schumaker. “It's not about pitch [count] anymore. It's more about pitch quality and execution and velo and everything that needs to keep trending the right direction. Hopefully he gets to a spot where he feels good with the fastball and the velo and the command and all of the sequencing and the pitch quality. All of that stuff has to start matching up to where it's going to be effective up here as well. And I think he's really close to making that happen.”

Jacob deGrom has been dealing with a nagging hip/glute situation since being scratched from his final start before the All-Star break. Montgomery could slot into his spot in the rotation if deGrom needs an extra day of rest.
