Montgomery K's 3 in rehab start, could join Rangers' rotation soon

ARLINGTON -- After being rained out on Friday night, Jordan Montgomery continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday in Albuquerque.
Montgomery is nearing a return to the big league mound for the first time since Sept. 22, 2024, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2025.
How did he perform?
In his seventh rehab start, the Rangers wanted Montgomery to get up to around 75 pitches, and that’s exactly where he landed. He threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three.
He touched 92.7 mph with his sinker and averaged 90.6 mph throughout his outing, per Statcast.
What’s next?
Montgomery said he wants this to be his final rehab start, but it’s to be seen if that will actually be the case. He could potentially be an option for the next turn through the rotation.
“I mean, this is my Spring Training, and I haven't pitched in a year and a half,” Montgomery said earlier this homestand. “So if they expect me to be where I was, like, prime season, built up and everything, that's just super unrealistic. I think the fact that I'm hitting 92 [mph] in bullpens and just flipping 89 is a really good sign. I think if I'm 91-93, I can pitch and get some adrenaline, that can turn into 93-94. I feel like I've gotten better every time. My sinkers have been really consistent down-in to righties. The front hip is getting more consistent. All the shapes are good. I'm really happy with where they're at.”

“I'm sure a lot of rehabbers don't really want to be down there too much longer,” Texas manager Skip Schumaker said. “We're just trying to get these guys right. I think it'd be unfair to him or for us if he’s not right and ready to go during a time where we're in a situation where we're trying to win every single game. It doesn't do us any good or him any good if he's not ready. We're just making sure that [he is] ready to go before any sort of activation, and then obviously you have to make a move up here. So we just want to make sure.”

Fellow UCL rehabber Cody Bradford also continued his assignment at Double-A Frisco on Friday, throwing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
