Soriano, Wood earn Player of the Week honors

Angels right-hander José Soriano continued his torrid start to 2026 and Nationals outfielder James Wood put on an absolute hitting clinic on the way to earning their first career Player of the Week honors.

After tossing six shutouts in each of his first starts to begin the season, Soriano was every bit as dominant last week, when he limited the Braves to one run and three hits with 10 strikeouts in eight innings on Monday, then followed that up with seven innings of two-hit shutout ball with 10 more Ks against the Reds on Sunday.

Soriano, 27, leads all Major League pitchers in the Triple Crown categories -- four wins, 0.33 ERA and 31 strikeouts -- while also pacing the big leagues with a bWAR of 1.8.

How dominant has Soriano been? He's the first pitcher since at least 1900 to allow fewer than 10 hits and two runs in their first four appearances of a season covering at least 25 innings. He's also the first Angels to win AL Player of the Week honors since Jo Adell won last Sept. 8, and the first Halos full-time pitcher to win since Reid Detmers on May 16, 2022.

Wood, on the heels of clubbing 31 homers last year in his first full season in the big leagues, shook off a sluggish start to 2026 to rebound nicely in six games last week. The 23-year-old went 12-for-22 (.545) with three doubles, three homers, eight runs scored, eight RBIs and two steals to help lead the Nationals to four wins, including a weekend sweep of the Brewers.

Wood swiped home and went deep Sunday, becoming the first Nationals player to accomplish the rare dual feat since the franchise moved to Washington in 2005. He's also the first Nats player to be named NL Player of the Week since Eddie Rosario won on May 13, 2024.

Rockies left fielder Jordan Beck took home the Play of the Week Award with an amazing running grab to rob Padres veteran Nick Castellanos of a three-run home run in the first inning Saturday at Petco Park.

It's the first Play of the Week honor for Beck, and just the third for any Rockies player since the award's inception in 2019, joining Randall Grichuk on April 18, 2022, and Brenton Doyle on July 1, 2024.
