The Athletics have acquired left-handed pitcher José Suarez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations and designated outfielder Junior Perez for assignment, the club announced on Thursday.
Suarez began the season with Atlanta and was 0-1 with a save and a 6.61 ERA in eight games when he was designated for assignment on May 1. He was claimed off waivers by Seattle on May 3, allowed a run on two hits and two walks in 2.0 innings last Saturday at Chicago-AL, and was designated for assignment on Wednesday. The 28-year-old left-hander is 0-1 with one save, a 6.38 ERA and .846 opponents OPS in nine games, including one start. Suarez has a .333 opponents batting average and has issued 14 walks while striking out 24 in 18.1 innings. He made his Major League debut with Los Angeles-AL in 2019 and is 22-30 with a 5.34 ERA in 115 games, including 63 starts, in eight seasons in the Majors with the Angels (2019-24), Braves (2025-26) and Mariners (2026).
Perez has spent the entire season at Triple-A Las Vegas and is batting .210 with five home runs, 19 RBI and a .657 OPS in 36 games. He was acquired from the San Diego Padres on Nov. 5, 2020 and was added to the A’s 40-man roster this past off-season.
