Konnor Griffin has had a lot on his plate this spring. So, naturally, multitasking has come in handy.
The No. 1 prospect in baseball has launched four home runs for the Pirates during Cactus League play and on Friday night, prior to the Bucs’ Spring Breakout game against the Tigers, he was presented with a Minor League Gold Glove Award for his outstanding defense at shortstop.
Then, the multitasking showed up.
During the Pirates’ broadcast of the game, Griffin was mic’d up. And wouldn’t you know it, the ball was hit his way.
In the third inning, Detroit’s Chris Meyers hit a sharp ground ball to short, where Griffin was in the middle of answering a question from the broadcast booth. Griffin was unfazed, making the play with ease.
First time being mic’d up on the field, during a Spring Training game while trying to make the big league Opening Day roster? No sweat.

“It’s been fun at short,” Griffin said later in the interview. “I feel like I’m just really locked in every pitch.”
The booth was apparently stressed about the play, even if Griffin wasn’t.

“I think we were more nervous than you were,” said longtime play-by-play broadcaster Greg Brown. “Believe me, I was on pins and needles. Wow.”
“Wow” is something we might be saying a lot in response to Griffin’s exploits on the diamond in the near future.
