Injuries to Teel (ankle), Montgomery (shin) dampen White Sox 6th win in 7 games

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The joy of a 10-3 shellacking administered by the White Sox upon the Rangers on Monday night at Globe Life Field was somewhat tempered for the American League Central leaders.

Tempered, because both catcher Kyle Teel and shortstop Colson Montgomery left the team’s sixth victory in seven games with injuries. Montgomery fouled a pitch off his right shin/calf area in the top of the seventh, while Teel was helped off the field in the second inning with a left ankle injury suffered after a play at the plate where Ezequiel Duran scored from second on Evan Carter’s single to right.

Teel was on crutches postgame and will almost certainly move to the injured list, with Edgar Quero coming from Triple-A Charlotte to replace him. He will undergo further evaluation Tuesday to determine the exact severity of the injury.

“I feel terrible for him,” said White Sox designated hitter Andrew Benintendi, who delivered Monday’s game-winning three-run double off Jacob deGrom, of Teel. “Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.”

“It's really tough, as much passion as he has for the game, as hard as he works,” White Sox manager Will Venable said. “You feel bad for any of these guys when they go down, but Kyle, having to deal with so many things here and so many setbacks is really tough.”

Duran’s head-first slide into the plate beat Braden Montgomery’s throw home, a throw Teel grabbed and then tried to spin around behind him and make the tag. Teel got to his feet after being looked at on the field but had to rest his arms on Venable and head athletic trainer James Kruk as he exited and was replaced by Drew Romo.

Arguably one of the best all-around players on the White Sox roster, suffered a right hamstring strain while running out a double for Team Italy against USA on March 10 during the World Baseball Classic. He then suffered a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee while doing injury rehab work at Triple-A Charlotte on May 16, when his cleat stuck on a swing.

The energetic force made his season debut on June 22 and entered Monday’s series opener with a .194 average, two homers and 14 RBIs. Quero, a switch-hitter, is the only other catcher on the 40-man with Teel and Romo.

Colson Montgomery was replaced at shortstop by Luisangel Acuña after fouling the pitch off his right shin/calf ankle in the top of the frame. He finished the at-bat before departing defensively, but didn’t need X-rays on the injury.

“No, it was all muscle,” Montgomery said. “It hit my shin really, I mean, don’t know what else you can call it. It was a direct hit on my calf muscle. Completely missed my shin guard.

“It feels pretty sore right now. I talked to Will and said see how I feel tomorrow. I’m not worried about it being a long-term thing. At the worst, it’s probably a day, but like I said, I’m going to come in tomorrow and do whatever I can to be able to play.”
