1st hit, 1st homer and 1st ... rock-paper-scissors win? Montes does it ALL in debut

Lazaro Montes’ Major League debut was filled with good first impressions, his signature power and a little bit of home run trident whimsy, as he and the Mariners took home a 9-6 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Montes’ personality meshed well with that of the red-hot and fan-favorite Randy Arozarena. After the duo celebrated Montes’ first career blast by putting a spin on Arozarena’s trademark trident strumming, Montes then topped Arozarena in a friendly match of rock-paper-scissors in the dugout.

Arozarena locked eyes with a broadcast camera while sitting next to Montes in the Fenway Park dugout. He tapped Montes, enlisting his new teammate for a challenge. Montes won the first draw -- paper over rock -- and Arozarena took the second -- scissors over paper.

In the deciding faceoff, Montes took home bragging rights with a savvy rock choice to beat Arozarena’s scissors. The rookie let out a celebratory roar and beat his chest after the win.

So, if you’re keeping track, that made for: two hits, one home run, two RBIs, a Mariners win AND a rock-paper-scissors win for the 21-year-old Montes in his debut.

Arozarena joked through an interpreter Wednesday that he let Montes win: "It was his night."

Montes Mania is officially underway in Seattle. It helps that MLB Pipeline’s No. 56 overall prospect has a larger-than-life personality, as hard as that may be to believe, considering his 6-foot-5, 250-pound stature.
