This college team scored how many runs in record-setting first inning?!

It was a wild, record-breaking day at the park for Lehigh baseball in an NCAA game against Coppin State on Tuesday.

The Mountain Hawks defeated the Eagles, 38-6, in seven innings. That included 20(!) runs in the top of the first, the most in any Division I game. It topped the previous record that had stood for 52 years, with Air Force and Princeton each putting up 18-run opening frames in 1974. However, Lehigh’s outburst fell just short of the most runs scored in a Division I game in any inning, as George Mason tagged Holy Cross for 23 runs in the second inning in 2025.

Lehigh posted its 20 top-of-the-first runs on just three hits.

The first five runs scored before the first out. Four hit batters, two walks, a double and a single came before a strikeout. The next 11 runs came exclusively on walks or hit batsmen.

First baseman Owen Walewander then put down the finishing touches with a grand slam. The next two batters flied out and grounded out to mercifully end the inning.

In total, Lehigh scored its 20 runs on 11 walks, six hit batsmen and three hits. There were also four passed balls or wild pitches that helped move runners from station to station. Four different Coppin State pitchers toed the rubber.

Senior third baseman Aidan Quinn also set an individual record with seven walks, while Lehigh’s 38 total runs were the most in a single game by a Patriot League team.

Lehigh ended the day with 12 hits, 25 walks and nine hit batsmen.
