Three-time batting champ Luis Arraez is weighing free-agent contract offers from multiple clubs, sources tell MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, but his defensive position could be the determining factor in his decision.
Arraez is considering one- and multi-year deals, with a preference to play second base for whichever team signs him, Feinsand reports.
Though he played mostly at first base last season for the Padres (117 games) and has played the position a lot since 2022 (263 games total), Arraez has spent the majority of his career at second (359 games), with stints at third (79 games), left field (48) and shortstop (eight) mixed in. He's also spent significant time at DH (124 games).
While he possesses versatility in the field, defense has never been among his strong suits. Arraez has been worth minus-60 Outs Above Average for his career, including minus-36 at second base -- the lowest mark among all qualified second basemen since his debut in 2019.
Still, Arraez has been much more productive at second base than at first. He's hit .325 as a second baseman with a .786 OPS, compared to .301 and a .749 OPS at first base.
Last season, he hit .292 with a .719 OPS for the Padres. It was his first season with an average below .300 since 2021.
In 2024, Arraez became the first player in history to win three straight batting titles with three teams (Twins, Marlins, Padres). He enters '26 with a .317 career average, the highest among active players.
