Wrist sprain puts Campusano on injured list

Luis Campusano will have to wait for a follow-up to his impressive big league debut.

The 21-year-old catcher homered on Friday after earning his promotion earlier in the day. But he was scratched from Saturday's game and landed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left wrist sprain.

Campusano, ranked as the Padres' No. 4 prospect and No. 51 overall by MLB Pipeline, sustained the injury on Saturday during batting practice. Manager Jayce Tingler expressed optimism that Campusano would return after his minimum 10-day stint is up.

“If he continues to progress and make the same progression he had from last night to tonight, we feel confident that over a couple days we should be close to 100 percent,” Tingler said. “He should have an opportunity -- if things go well -- to be able to get some at-bats, get some reps on the practice side and come back fully healthy down the stretch. That’s what we’re hoping for.”

Right-hander Taylor Williams, acquired from the Mariners on Monday for a player to be named, was recalled in a corresponding move. Williams owns a 5.93 ERA in 14 appearances this season, though five of the nine runs he allowed came in one game against the Padres, before he was traded.

The Padres are set at catcher in Campusano's absence, with an Austin Nola/Jason Castro platoon expected. But they'll miss Campusano's potent righty bat on a bench that's mostly filled with left-handed hitters. Campusano was named co-MVP of the California League last season, after hitting .325/.396/.509 with 15 home runs.
