MILWAUKEE – There was renewed concern for Brewers shortstop prospect Luis Peña on Tuesday after the 19-year-old had to be helped from his position to the dugout during High-A Wisconsin’s 14-11 win at Cedar Rapids.

The Brewers said Peña (Milwaukee’s No. 2 prospect and MLB Pipeline's No. 18 overall) left the game with an illness, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Before that abrupt exit, he singled, stole second base and scored in the first inning on fellow top prospect Andrew Fischer’s 16th home run of the season, then batted again in the second and struck out. Fischer was by Peña’s side on the infield in the bottom of the second inning when Peña put his hands on his knees and an athletic trainer hustled out to see him.

Fischer and several staff members then helped Peña toward the dugout, where he leaned over again and appeared to get sick.

It has been an uneasy start to the season for Peña, who missed a month of play after fainting in the dugout during the Timber Rattlers’ April 22 game in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Brewers believe that episode was caused by dehydration, but they put Peña through several weeks of medical tests to rule out a cardiac or neurological problem before clearing him to resume baseball activities during the week of May 11.

He played in three games in the Arizona Complex League before returning to action for the Timber Rattlers on May 27. Peña was playing in his fifth game back with Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
