Mariners claim Freitas, reinstate Whalen

The Mariners added catcher David Freitas and right-handed pitching prospect Rob Whalen to the Major League roster on Friday. Seattle's 40-man roster is now full.
Freitas, claimed off waivers from the Braves, spent the final month of the 2017 season with Atlanta. The 28-year-old appeared in six games, batting. 235 (4-for-17) with two RBIs.
Whalen, who was reinstated, ranks No. 19 in Seattle's farm system per MLBPipeline.com and went 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA in two games (one start) for the Mariners last season. In 10 starts with Triple-A Tacoma, the 23-year-old compiled an 0-7 record with a 6.58 ERA and 43 strikeouts over 53 1/3 innings.
