Segura day to day with sprained finger

SEATTLE -- Jean Segura is still ailing from a sprained middle finger sustained during the Mariners' 11-4 loss to the Indians on Saturday and remains day to day, according to Mariners manager Scott Servais.
"He's hoping to get back on the field," Servais said. "Overall, he's had a very good season and he wants to finish it off, but it's going to be at least a couple days I think. We'll see how it is when we get to Oakland."
Segura's injury occurred on a ninth-inning comebacker from Indians third baseman Yandy Díaz that Mariners pitcher Aríel Miranda knocked down with his throwing hand and fired to Robinson Canó at second base. But it sailed over the second baseman's glove and struck Segura -- running behind Cano to back up the play -- on his throwing hand.
He appeared to be in considerable pain at first, but X-rays were negative and there was no dislocation.
Utility infielder Taylor Motter started at shortstop and Ben Gamel moved into the leadoff position for the Mariners' home finale against the Indians at Safeco Field on Sunday.
The 27-year-old Segura is hitting .296/.345/.422 in 124 games. He has been on the disabled list twice this season, missing 12 games (April 11-25) with a strained right hamstring and another 18 games (June 2-11) with a right high ankle sprain.
Mariners conscious of Miranda's usage
Servais said before Sunday's game that the Mariners will be careful with how they use left-handed pitcher Ariel Miranda in the final seven games of the season. Servais said he certainly won't start, but sending him out for an inning or two in relief is an option to provide him additional work.
"If the situation dictates it, we could get him an inning here or there," Servais said. "He won't make a start for us anymore. I don't think there's enough left there in the tank to ask him to do that. I don't think it's fair to him.
"I don't want to just say, 'Shut it down and don't do anything for a week.' I think he's a part of the team and he could still help us in the bullpen if we need a guy to pick up a couple of innings."
Miranda has made a team-high 29 starts for the Mariners this season, but the 28-year-old sputtered in his last six and owned a 6.81 ERA from Aug. 2 to Sept. 11. The long ball has been an Achilles' heel for Miranda, as he has allowed an MLB-high 37. He served up two home runs to the Indians in a five-run ninth inning on Saturday.
