OAKLAND -- Shortstop Jean Segura and reliever Steve Cishek, two key players in the Mariners plans, had Minor League rehab outings on Friday and could rejoin the club during its current road trip.
Segura went 0-for-3 with a walk while playing designated hitter in his first game for Double-A Arkansas. He's slated to play shortstop Saturday.
Manager Scott Servais said Segura needs two or three rehab outings to test his strained right hamstring, so it's possible he could be back with the Mariners as early as Sunday in Oakland. If not, he'll join the team to start its next road series Tuesday in Detroit.
Cishek started Friday's Triple-A game for Tacoma at El Paso and walked two and gave up a single before being removed after two outs and 20 pitches. Servais said the club would like to see him pitch in back-to-back outings before having him join the Mariners, as he works back from microfracture right hip surgery in October.
"We're on a long road trip and I'd love to see him before the end of the trip, but it may be when we get back home," said Servais, whose club plays at Detroit and Cleveland before returning to Seattle on May 2.
Worth noting
• Catcher Mike Zunino was in the initial lineup posted by the Mariners on Friday, but was replaced by Carlos Ruiz several hours before the game. Zunino is fine and apparently the issue was a miscommunication on the initial posting.
• Right-hander Shae Simmons, who has been out since March with a right elbow strain, remains in Peoria, Ariz., and is just beginning a throwing program. Lefty Drew Smyly is rehabbing in Seattle from his left elbow strain and won't begin throwing until mid-May.
