SEATTLE -- Jarrett Grube's stay with the Mariners proved to be short, as general manager Jerry Dipoto optioned the right-hander back to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday after one day with the big league club.
Grube, 34, was recalled on Wednesday to provide coverage for a bullpen that was thin following a 15-inning win over the Tigers on Tuesday, but he wasn't used in Wednesday night's 3-1 victory over Detroit as starter Félix Hernández went seven innings before Arquimedes Caminero and Nick Vincent finished off the final two frames.
Grube's departure leaves Seattle with an opening on its 25-man roster that will be filled with a corresponding move prior to Friday's 7:05 p.m. PT game at Oakland, as the Mariners open a seven-game road trip.
Grube is 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) with Tacoma after being signed as a Minor League free agent on June 9 following his release by the Indians.
Grube has spent 13 years in the Minors, including with the Mariners previously from 2010-12, and he has made just one Major League appearance in that span, throwing two-thirds of an inning for the Angels on May 31, 2014, at Oakland.
