SEATTLE -- While the Mariners continue their search for a new manager, a chunk of their player development staff is keeping tabs on their handful of prospects participating in this year’s Arizona Fall League.
Here’s a recap of the action within the organization last week.
Hitter of the week: 1B Matthew Ellis
The 6-foot-4 slugger went 4-for-11 with two massive homers, including one that left his bat at 104.5 mph. He also tallied five RBIs and two walks, to go with just two strikeouts, which was good for a slash line of .364/.462/.909 (1.371 OPS) in three games played for the Peoria Javelinas.
Ellis, 26, has been in the organization since he signed a Minors contract in August 2024, and he has climbed from Single-A Modesto to High-A Everett, where he spent all of last season and clubbed 17 homers. He was an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech.
Pitcher of the week: RHP Adam Smith
Smith struck out four of the five batters he faced over 1 2/3 across two outings -- both against the Scottsdale Scorpions. Overall, he’s now been scoreless in three of his four outings, with zero walks and just two hits allowed, which is good for a 0.55 WHIP.
Smith joined the organization in May, when his contract was purchased from the Lancaster Stormers, an independent team out of the Atlantic League. But he also spent three seasons in the Padres’ organization and another two with the Red Sox’s lower-level affiliates. He was a 14th-round pick out of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2021.
Play of the week: 11-run inning
Ellis was the headliner in this one, going 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and four RBIs. The long ball capped a whopping 11 runs in the fifth inning alone, which helped the Javelinas run away to a commanding 13-5 win over the Scorpions.
Player to watch: C Boston Smith (No. 13 prospect)
There might not have been a prospect within Seattle’s system that soared more over the season’s final two months than Smith, who is now playing on his fifth -- yes, fifth -- team in 2026.
His path to this point has been relatively well-chronicled -- thanks to an outstanding piece from MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo -- beginning in the Nationals organization before being traded to the White Sox in Spring Training, then the Mariners ahead of the Trade Deadline in the Luis Castillo deal. Because he’s played within three organizations, while climbing three Minors affiliates and now getting his first taste of the AFL, the Javelinas are indeed his fifth team in 2026.
Smith has had somewhat of a slow go at the plate and went 2-for-12 last week. But the results are taking a back seat to the overall experience.
“Whether it's good or bad, there's always something to learn,” Smith told Mayo. “And knowing that now, it's just, ‘How can I surround myself with the best of the best? And how can I come out better than what I came in going into the Fall League?’ That's my attitude.
“I want to develop. I want to learn. I want to build connections and just enjoy."
