Mariners sign Nieuwenhuis to Minors deal

SEATTLE -- While the Hot Stove season has yet to heat up much, the Mariners made a small move on Tuesday by signing outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Major League camp next spring.
The 30-year-old played 16 games for the Brewers last season as well as 84 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs. His biggest stint in the Majors came in 2016, when he posted a .209/.324/.385 line with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs in 125 games for Milwaukee.

Nieuwenhuis has spent parts of six seasons in the Majors, including four with the Mets from 2012-14. He played 10 games for the Angels in 2015 before being claimed back off waivers by the Mets. He then spent the past two years in the Brewers organization before being granted free agency last month.
The left-handed hitter has a .221/.311/.384 career line in 978 at-bats in 414 games in the Majors, and in 2015, he hit three home runs for the Mets against the D-backs at Citi Field. He hit .244/.362/.361 with four homers and 33 RBIs for Colorado Springs last year.
