Mariners deal Wieland to Braves for cash

ANAHEIM -- Joe Wieland, a right-handed pitcher who started one game for the Mariners this season, was traded to the Braves on Wednesday for cash.
The 26-year-old pitched well for Triple-A Tacoma, posting a 14-6 record and a 5.43 ERA with 118 strikeouts and 39 walks in 124 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (24 starts). He tied for first in the Pacific Coast League in wins and was ninth in strikeouts.
In his one game for the Mariners, Wieland took the loss in Oakland on Aug. 12 when he allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings.
The Mariners acquired Wieland from the Dodgers in January in a trade for infielder Erick Mejia. In parts of four seasons with the Padres, Dodgers and Mariners, Wieland has combined to go 1-6 with a 6.32 ERA in 12 games, including 10 starts.
Wieland is the second pitcher traded by Seattle for a player to be named or cash in the past two days. Veteran Wade LeBlanc was sent to the Pirates on Tuesday is a similar deal.
