Marlins option Conley, put Rojas on 60-day DL

MIAMI -- Adam Conley, who opened the season as the Marlins' fifth starter, was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday as part of a series of transactions.
The club also announced infielder Miguel Rojas (fractured right thumb) was put on the 60-day disabled list. First baseman Tyler Moore's contract was selected from New Orleans, and catcher Tomás Telis was recalled from the Baby Cakes.
Rojas will have surgery on Friday, and will need at least six to eight weeks of recovery time. Also, third baseman Martín Prado, who was placed on the DL on Monday, has a Grade 2 right hamstring strain. He is expected to miss at least five to six weeks.
For the first time this year, Miami now has a five-man bench and seven relievers. Previously, it had gone with an eight-man bullpen and four off the bench.
Conley, 26, dealt with command issues in Spring Training, and he was on the bubble in the final days of camp. But he earned a rotation spot based on the fact that he impressed in 2016, going 8-6 with a 3.85 ERA in 25 starts.
However, Conley got off to a 2-3 start with a 7.53 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) this season. He struggled to locate his fastball, especially on Monday night, giving up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. In Conley's past three starts, he had an ERA of 15.19 (18 earned runs in 10 2/3 innings).
"What we told him, it just wasn't good enough," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "He had a couple of good outings, but in general, it hasn't been good enough. That's basically what we said. We think it can be, but this gives him an opportunity to get it together and get himself back on track."

How the Marlins plan on replacing Conley's rotation spot has yet to be announced. But Edinson Vólquez (right thumb blister) is expected to come off the disabled list and start on Saturday.
José Ureña is moving from long relief to start on Friday, and Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) is close to being reinstated from the DL.
More clarity on the bullpen will be known after Volquez and Chen throw their bullpen sessions on Wednesday.
"If Volqy is going, I think it's Saturday for him," Mattingly said. "If not, we've got to make another little adjustment."
Rojas has appeared in 24 games with Miami this season, batting .338 with 12 runs scored and two stolen bases before breaking his thumb while swinging the bat on Sunday.

Moore, 30, is in his second stint with the Marlins, having previously appeared in eight games, with 11 at-bats, hitting .364 with one RBI.
Telis, a switch-hitter, batted .238 at New Orleans. He has played some first base in addition to catching.
