ANAHEIM -- Mason Miller might just be human.
Might be.
The Padres’ lights-out closer still hasn’t allowed a run since last August. But he allowed a hit and a walk on Saturday night in San Diego’s 4-1 victory over the Angels. These days, that qualifies as a rocky outing.
Of course, after he allowed the potential tying run to come to the plate in the ninth, Miller settled in to finish the job, punching out Logan O’Hoppe before an Adam Frazier groundout ended the game.
After joining the Padres at the Trade Deadline last summer, Miller allowed two runs in his second appearance with the club. That was Aug. 5. He hasn’t allowed a run since. With Saturday’s scoreless outing, Miller has now thrown 31 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, two innings shy of the franchise record set by Cla Meredith in 2006.
“We can get lost a little bit in how hard he throws, how nasty his slider is, how he’s throwing a changeup,” manager Craig Stammen said. “But for him to be the same person almost every single time he goes out there on the mound is pretty amazing. That’s the hardest thing to do as a pitcher.”
Miller has barely even allowed any contact, let alone runs. In 35 plate appearances against Miller this season, only Luis Arraez had recorded a hit until Yoán Moncada did so on Saturday. Miller has also allowed two walks.
Meanwhile, of those 35 hitters, Miller has punched out 25 of them -- a ridiculous 71.4% clip.
